Tree Climbing Equipment: What You Need & Need To Know!
Tree climbing equipment is used by professional tree climbers, instructors (that teach people how to climb trees safely), and recreational climbers. This equipment is commonly referred to a ‘Tree Climbing Gear’. Unlike climbing from limb to limb, to climb a tree, ‘Gear’ makes tree climbing easier and safer than attempting it, without the gear.
Recreational tree climbing is gaining popularity. This sport is exciting, and a lot of fun, but you want to use the right gear, for safety. Safety isn’t anything to fool around with. Tree Climbing requires some basic safety equipment. Just ask any professional, you just can’t be too safe!
Here is a checklist of the equipment you should have, whether you’re climbing for recreation, or climbing professionally.
Climbing Rope The length of the rope is dependent upon the height of the tree that you will be climbing. There are several types of ropes ranging from basic to professional. Don’t skimp on your rope. Make sure you get a good one, that will more than hold your weight.
Safety Harness There are two types of harness’s, there are waist belt and chest belts. When used together, they tend to give you a little more balance. Mek sure they fit snugly.
Spikes Considered to be one of the more important pieces of climbing equipment. They strap onto your boots and make it a lot easier to climb trees.
Quickdraws & Bolt Anchors Climbers use quickdraws to attach their ropes to the bolt anchors.
A Jumar The Jumar or an ‘ascender’ helps provide a grip on the rope with a locking mechanism. The way the Jumar works, is that it is attached to the harness through a sling and then is clipped on the rope.
Descender Is a rappel device also known as a friction brake and is designed for use when descending.
Helmet Choose a helmet that has a strap and has a snug fit.
Enjoy your climbing, whether your climbing professionally, or just for fun. Most importantly, climb safely! Make sure you choose quality tree climbing equipment, and keep your ‘gear’ clean and in good working order! You’re life depends on it!
